William R. Kassulker, 25, of Pillager, MN was charged in Cass County District Court with a first and third degree felony after he allegedly assaulted 22-year-old, Adam C. Stonacek of Pine River. The incident occurred in the parking lot of Zorbaz at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. According to the complaint, Kassulker was with several friends at Zorbaz where he became impetuous and was escorted out of the bar. Kassulker had told security members that his ex-girlfriend was talking with another guy and he wanted to, in terms of “beat him up”, and then walked away. Stonacek began to walk near Kassulker and his group, which lead to Kassulker pushing Stonacek to the ground. When Stonacek got to his feet he took a swing at Kassulker, but missed. Kassulker then punched Stonacek, and went down and hit his head on the concrete. When law enforcement arrived, Kassulker and his friends had fled the scene, they were not able to locate him that night. Later on, Kassulker met up with police and turned himself in. Stonacek was transported to Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd were a CAT scan revealed he suffered two skull fractures, several brain bleeds and air in the brain. He then was airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital where they also discovered the victim had a laceration on the left side of his face, an abrasion above and behind his left ear and a swollen left cheek. Stonacek was released from the hospital earlier this week. If convicted of a felony first-degree assault charge, Kassulker carries a sentence of a maximum of 20 years in prison and a fine between $9,000 and $30,000. A felony of third-degree assault would also result in a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine between $3,000 and $10,000.
