The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced earlier this week that 35 counties throughout the state began burning restrictions. Local counties affected by the burning restrictions include Becker, Cass, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Otter Tail, Todd and Wadena. Other counties included Aitkin, Anoka, souther Beltrami, Benton, Carlton, Shisago, Clearwater, Crow Wing, Dakota, Douglas, Hennepin, Hubbard, Isanti, Itasca, Kanabec, Kittson, Manhomen, Marshall, Pennington, Pine, Polk, Pope, Ramsey, Roseau, Sherburne, Stearns, Washington and Wright. Burning restrictions in these areas are placed each spring to reduce the occurrence of wildfires. Restrictions will also be placed on counties including Cook, Koochiching, Lake, Lake of the Woods and St. Louis County effective April 2. The risk of wildfires will remain high until green vegetation arrives. Until that occurs, no burning will be allowed unless a special permit is obtained from a local forestry office. Special permits will only be written under certain circumstances such as small construction projects and conducted burns executed by professional firefighters. The use of campfires will continue to be allowed if they are smaller than 3 feet in diameter and 3 feet in height, or unless limited by the local jurisdiction. Statewide permits are not required for this type of fire. For more information and maps, and to check fire condition visit www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry/fire/firerating_restrictions.html.
