The Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Management office, is giving out a reminder to local citizens that April 16-20 is Minnesota’s Severe Weather Awareness Week. With summer just around the corner, the Sheriff’s Office recommends all residents practice tornado and severe thunderstorm drills to be aware of safety actions in these situations. Each day of the week will focus on a different type of hazardous summer weather. Monday, April 16 will focus on thunderstorms, hail, lightning and straight-line winds. Tuesday, April 17 will be devoted to severe weather warnings. Wednesday, April 18 will highlight what to do during floods and flash floods and Thursday, April 19 will be the tornado drill day. The state of Minnesota is conducting its statewide tornado drills at 1:45 p.m. and another at 6:55 p.m. Citizens are urged to conduct the drill actions as if the simulated storm is real, whether residents are at home, school or at work. The evening drill is recommended to be controlled in your home to practice keeping your family safe in the event of a natural disaster. Friday, April 20 is the last day of severe weather awareness, which will focus on heat. The Severe Weather Awareness Week campaign is designed to inform and prepare the public and encourages the proper protective actions to reduce the loss of life and injury due to Minnesota’s severe weather. Any questions or concerns can be referred to Deputy Brain Halbasch with the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office at (218) 732-2588.
