With all the recent rain we have been getting the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has lifted burning restrictions in 13 additional counties. Counties removed from the burning restriction, effective Monday, May 7 include Aitkin, Becker, Carlton, southern Cass, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Otter Tail, Pine (except for the St. Croix Valley blow-down area), Todd and Wadena. Although these counties are now excluded from the state burning restrictions, local areas and counties may still have specific restrictions that affect burning operations. To be sure on those conditions, the DNR encourages individuals to check with local authorities before they begin to burn. Fire danger can change quickly, and due to this fact, the DNR notes that their electronic permit system may deny permit activations in certain counties when daily conditions are permissible to take action. This could occur on a dry, windy day where fires could easily start and burn rapidly. The DNR advises anyone burning to keep burn piles small, have a water supply nearby and stay with the fire until it is completely out. Counties still under the burning restrictions include Beltrami, northern Cass, Clearwater, Cook, Itasca, Kittson, Koochiching, Lake, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshell, Pennington, southern & eastern Polk, Roseau and St. Louis.
